I still prefer the rough old style. Yeah, they can school now every great band but do they really need this?
My favorite example of the changes is the song "Shame on me", the old rough recording kicks ass.. the new one is perfect but doesn't.
I still remember that I thought in the 90s alot of records (not exclusive Social D) were perfectly produced. In comparison to the new stuff with more bass, clear voice also less humming guitars what the hell.. Listen to more popular music like Green Day or NOFX, they did the same.
Live at the roxy is a rough diamond because of the sound. I think I prefer WHWLWT and all old style records of Social D 'cause they aren't polished.
WHLWLWT is maybe the best example because it's the album you can listen to 500 times and you still find out things you've never noticed (notice the breaths ). That's significant because Mike never changed the simple punk style structure of his songs.
But perfectly clean produced it goes straight into popmusic, pleases 5-10 times and you'll think these songs are boring and have no soul.
SLARNR stands between old fashioned Punk and something new, they've added some old style parts of earlier records but sometimes they really sound "added".
'Live in OC' lacks because of other things.. that's why I prefer the Roxy recording and alot of bootlegs.
I prefer live at the roxy over the live in OC dvd. The quality of the sound is better on Live at the roxy..on the live in oc dvd it just sounds "quiet".
I just think it's great that over the years, they have reinvented their sound/production style/musical direction, yet still it unmistakenly sounds like Social Distortion.
I agree with you ThyWillNotMine!
